Baltimore
NOW has received many email and phone inquiries regarding the 2008 Presidential
Election.
In response to these inquiries, we are posting this information on our
site.
First it is important to explain that Baltimore NOW cannot participate (as a chapter) in the 2008 Presidential election process. There are very strict federal laws that govern candidate endorsement and activities in an election year. Only a federal PAC (Political Action Committee) can endorse a candidate and raise money for a candidate. Baltimore NOW is a local chapter of the National Organization for Women, which is a 501c4 tax exempt organization. As a chapter and a 501c4 organization, we are prohibited from electioneering. For us to do so would jeopardize our local chapter tax status and possible the tax status of the National Organization for Women. Many NOW members are actively involved in campaigns and are of course free to do so as individuals; they simply cannot campaign on behalf of the chapter.
With that said, the National NOW PAC has endorsed Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton for President. Information about NOW's endorsement and related information can be found at: www.nowpac.org.
In addition to the NOW PAC
website, below are links to recent articles and statements from the National
Organization
for Women regarding the candidates, the election, and recent media focus.
